Living as Children of God in a Dark World

Greetings Balance Life Family,

This world is a dark place, but when Jesus saves and redeems us, we are no longer children of darkness. We must remember that we have access to the light, and that light is Jesus. Jesus is the light of the world.

John 8:12

I’m going to share a personal experience with you to illustrate what I mean: The light in my bedroom closet was broken. Somehow, the chain on the light had gotten stuck inside the fixture. No matter how I tried to giggle it around, it wouldn’t work.

It stayed broken for a long time. While it was broken, I had to search for everything I needed in the dark. Now, that wasn’t an easy task, but as time passed, I got accustomed to finding things in the dark.

Finally, an electrician came and fixed the light. WOW, was I happy! It was so good to finally have access to light in my closet. But here’s the thing. I had gotten into the habit of looking for things in the darkness. Sometimes I forgot I had access to the light and found myself still searching for things in the dark.

Living in the dark becomes a habit. Even when the light is available, we can still act as if we’re in darkness because we’ve gotten so accustomed to struggling without the light.

When Jesus shines light into our lives, He makes things clear. But if we don’t intentionally turn to Him. We may continue fumbling in old patterns of confusion, fear, or sin.

Just as I had to remind myself to turn on the light, we must train our hearts to choose the light daily: to pray, to read scripture, to walk in truth.

Having the light fixed but not turning it on shows how sometimes Christians have access to God’s power and wisdom, but forget to use it. “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light.” Ephesians 5:8
