Money: The Wonderful Servant and Horrible Master

Dear Balanced Life Family,

Money is one of life’s most contradictory tools. It can bless, build, and provide, yet it can also enslave, corrupt, and destroy. Scripture reminds us in 1 Timothy 6:10 that money itself is not evil, but the love of money is the root of all evil”. The difference lies in whether money serves us or whether we serve money.

When money is kept in its rightful place, it becomes a powerful servant. It provides food, clothing, shelter, education, and other things in life. It can also enable us to give, to support ministries, and to care for the poor. And if we’re good stewards, our money can multiply.

When money takes the throne of our hearts, it becomes a tyrant; a horrible master. The pursuit of wealth can consume us, leaving us restless and unsatisfied. Serving money often means sacrificing relationships, integrity, and even faith. Jesus warned us in Matthew 6:24, “Ye cannot serve God and mammon” (money).

When money becomes our master, it enslaves us with fear, pride, and endless striving. As a master, money demands loyalty but never gives peace. It promises happiness yet leaves emptiness.

Money is a tool, not a god. It is meant to serve, not to rule. Let Christ be your master and let money serve you. Remember, money is a contradictory tool. It can be a wonderful servant, but a horrible master.
